Difficult Forgiveness

"Forgive seventy times seven times."

— Matthew 18:22

Father of mercy,

There are wounds so deep that forgiveness seems impossible. Wrongs so grave that my anger seems legitimate. You ask me to forgive, but how can I?

I come to You with this struggle. I cannot forgive by my own strength. I need Your help, Your grace to loosen the grip of resentment that suffocates me.

Help me understand that forgiving does not mean minimizing the wrong, nor forgetting, nor even necessarily reconciling. Forgiving means freeing myself from the poison that consumes me. It means choosing to no longer let this wound direct my life.

Amen.

Reflection

Forgiveness is a journey, not a one-time event. For deep wounds, it can take years. Where are you on this journey?

For those who carry deep wounds and struggle with forgiveness.
